"In this economy, analyzing your data with excel spread sheet analytics has become more critical then ever. You should be drilling down into the detail -with excel- of your sales results in order to find the winners in your customer file and get the best results for your marketing dollar." Says Katie Croft of kcanlalytics.com.

This week, we are taking a look at using excel spread sheet techiques to understanding your customer base relative to the population. If you are a national company and are thinking of focusing your marketing efforts regionally be careful to not approach this decision one dimensionally.

Most companies think that CA is their sweet spot. But, often this is just the effect of the high population for that state.

You will see from the excel charts below, that CA ranks high at 6.67% of the total customer base.

But, when you compare this to the population of CA which is 12.22%, the customer total as a % to the population is actually much lower.

On the other hand, WY has a much higher customer base when compared to the population for that state. Raw counts alone do not provide this kind of information.

By comparing your customer base to the population, this analysis gives insight into where you will get the greatest return on your dollar and is an example of turning data into decisions.
